Stand-by
Notice: The position is subject to a stand-by schedule including weekdays,
weekends, and holidays. The standby notice requires the detective to restrict
their whereabouts and activities in order to be available for immediate
consultation or return to work. The stand-by schedule is routinely posted in
advance. Detectives subjected to stand-by duty are eligible for stand-by
compensation as approved by the Sheriff and McKenzie County Board of County
Commissioners.

via email from Guardian Alliance (application/background software). The
application will need to be completed no later than 4:30 PM on Monday, March 17, 2025 or the application will not be considered for the position. All
documents required for this position will need to be submitted within the
Guardian Alliance system.

Two (2) Example Reports for review
by the selection committee, or designees, to showcase to include but not
limited to: report writing examples, affidavit writing examples, investigative
skills, crime scene response and processing, interview and interrogation
skills, etc.
Two (2) or more letters of recommendation from a law enforcement agency or related
associate, i.e. other law enforcement agency member, state’s attorney, etc.
Process:Following the
submission deadline, a written test will be scheduled. In order to continue on
to the oral interview, the applicant must receive a minimum of 70% overall
score on the written test
The written exam
will include topics involving: agency investigative practices, agency policy,
evidence collection, local county government, state and federal law to include
juveniles, interview and interrogations, custody, case law, search and seizure,
search warrants, crime scene response (to include property crimes, assaults,
and death scenes), rules of criminal procedure and evidence, and missing
persons.
Following the
written test, an oral interview will be scheduled. The oral interview will
include topics of providing an oral resume, motivation, career intentions,
problem solving, and criminal investigative scenarios.
The
applicant’s application, written test, and oral interview will all be scored on
a weighted scale – Application (10% weighted score), Written Test (30% weighted
score), Oral Interview (60% weighted score). The example reports and letter of
recommendation will not be graded, but are included in the application
requirements and will be reviewed to assist in selection.
The position will be awarded according to scoring and at
the discretion of the Sheriff.
Typical Essential Duties and Task include, but are not
limited to:
- Record the progress of investigations, maintain
the informational files on suspects, and submit reports to obtain warrants.
Prepare charges or responses to charges and information for court cases,
according to formalized procedures. Obtain facts or statements from
complainants, witnesses, and accused persons. Examine records and governmental
agency files to find identifying data about suspects. Prepare and serve search
and arrest warrants. Maintains records of investigations.
- Conduct crime scene investigations to gather,
preserve, identify, and evaluate physical evidence. Preserve, process, and
analyze items of evidence obtained from crime scenes and suspects.
- Coordinate with outside agencies and serve on
interagency task forces to combat specific types of crime. Notify, or request
notification of, medical examiner or district attorney representatives.
- Provide testimony as a witness in court. Work with
Prosecuting Attorneys on what information is needed to find the truth in
criminal investigations.
- Prepare reports on work progress and submit
reports to superior officers.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature or
level.
Required Knowledge and Qualifications:- Possess knowledge of city/state/federal laws
which have a direct or indirect effect on law enforcement.
- Possess experience with modern office practices,
computer equipment, software, etc.
- Possess aptitude for attention to detail and multi-tasking.
- Possess ability to maintain
confidential/sensitive information.
- Possess accurate judgement and effective
decision making under pressure and stressful situations.
- Possess proper investigatory techniques
including, interview and interrogation skills, crime scene response,
intelligence gathering, and best-practice evidence collection skills.
- Possess superior oral and written skills.
- Possess an ability to work efficiently and
effectively with other jurisdictions.
- Possess high initiative and resourcefulness in
the investigation of criminal matters.
- Possess a willingness and desire to continue to
train and learn new and challenging tasks.
- Possess high public relations, standards of
conduct, and interest in agency success.
Required
Experience and Training:- In addition to the minimum requirements of
deputy including a valid driver’s license and ND POST license, the applicant
must possess a minimum of two (2) years of law enforcement
experience.

- Search Warrant Preparation training
- Applicant will be required to successfully
complete the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office Field Training program prior to
assignment as a Detective.
- Physical requirements and working conditions:
- Reaching, standing, walking, fingering,
grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, driving, and repetitive motions.
Some running and extreme physical exertion may be necessary.
- Combination of Sedentary and Active Work:
Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of
force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move
objects, including the human body. May
be subject to travel.
Required
Abilities and Working Conditions:- Must be physically fit in order to perform the
minimum requirements of deputy.
- Think and act properly in emergency situations
while using common sense and proper professional police training.
- While the position often involves sedentary
work, the position will occasionally require the exertion of force to lift,
carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Respond to and work in situations with
potential unfavorable conditions, to include but not limited to disturbing and
unpleasant crime scenes, inclement weather, prolonged sitting, standing, or
within confined spaces.
