The McKenzie
County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for one (1) opening in the
Administrative Division for Civil Deputy. The Civil Deputy is assigned to the Civil
Division and is under general supervision and shall exercise responsibilities
for the enforcement of state and local laws relating to civil paper service,
public safety and welfare. Exercise independent judgment in dealing with
dangerous or unusual situations while exercising safe practices and procedures.
May work under stressful, high-risk conditions. Reports to the Civil Sergeant. Level and salary commensurate with experience.

Pay Classification B24 - Starting salary for applicants is $32.43 per hour ($70,827.12 annually), depending on experience
Typical Schedule: 10.5 hour shifts, working one weekend in a 28 day period

Process:
Following the submission deadline, an oral interview will be scheduled. The oral interview will include topics of providing an oral resume, motivation, career intentions and problem solving.
The letter of recommendation is included in the application requirements and will be reviewed to assist in selection. Additionally, the applicant’s recent performance history (12 months) will be reviewed and may disqualify an applicant if the performance does not meet the needs of the position.
The position will be awarded according to oral interview, submitted documents, performance history, and at the discretion of the Sheriff.
Special Assignment Scope
The Civil Deputy
is a Deputy Sheriff position who is assigned to the Civil Division. This position responds to calls for civil
paper service, conducts pro-active policing to serve civil papers, and
represents the agency in a professional manner.
The Civil Deputy may be required to complete duties of a Patrol Deputy
based on the needs of the agency.
Special Assignment Essential Duties- Serves warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil and other official documents
- May be assigned to perform other duties as a Deputy Sheriff, Civil Deputy or Court Security Deputy as needed
- Processes civil paper; determines what resources to research to obtain to personal/business information and manner of research. Determine and/or make appropriate forms in Zuercher to properly complete data entry process.
- Serve civil paper; ensure papers are complete, determine correct person/business is serviced properly, calculate mileage. Completes the data entry for those services
- Conducts evictions. Ensures proper court proceedings and paperwork are obtained prior to the eviction process. Coordinates with managers, landlords, attorneys, renters and/or tenants for the proper eviction of tenants
- Stays up to date with law and civil procedure changes
- Able to assist the general public with proper civil procedures regarding the service of civil papers
- Knowledgeable of the proper civil procedures set forth by the North Dakota Rules of Civil Procedure
- Performs other duties of a similar nature, level or as assigned
Knowledge of:- Preparing reports and record keeping
- Working knowledge of human behavior and various social, economic, and cultural backgrounds
- Use of firearms, radio equipment, physical control devices, electric and electronic controls
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations
- Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle
- Willingness and desire to learn new and challenging tasks

- Assessing, prioritizing and determining appropriate levels for law enforcement and related emergency situations
Special Assignment Minimum Qualification:- One year of law enforcement experience is required
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Certified or eligible to be certified as a Law Enforcement Officer through the ND Post Board
- Must meet the requirements of the Deputy Sheriff position

All the physical demand and working conditions of a Deputy Sheriff apply within this assignment.
- Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
- Moderate work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Moderate work involves moving most of the time. Jobs are moderate if walking and standing are required frequently and all other moderate criteria are met
- Incumbents may be subject to travel.
